For the past 26 years, our sister company, A Wedding For You, has been coordinations weddings for couples traveling by cruise ships. The most popular destination is the Caribbean. There you will find many islands where the licensing process is very easy and all of the locations are fully recognized marriages in the United States (and Canada).
I was asked years ago, "Why would a couple want a destination wedding?".
The answer is three-fold:
1.Money. It is less expensive to have a destination wedding with 45-75 guests than 300.
2.The bride and groom are not the type of people who see themselves walking down an aisle with 700 eyes on them.
3.Here is the most popular reason: The bride grew up in Boston. The groom grew up in Los Angeles. They both attend the University of Wisconsin, meet and fall in love. Then, after graduation, they find their careers in Nashville. So, where do they get married. Someone from one of those locations would have to travel and that is not truly fair for most of the guests. Therefore, ask them al to travel to a neutral location.
Cruise ship destinations are wonderful because it limits the number of guests a couple would have at the wedding. The limit would be the family and close friends.
In addition, each guest would pay for their own travel. (They would have to do it anyway if you were to get married in Nashville...see the example above.) The bride and groom might help with the expenses of some special guests. But, as a whole, the travel is up to the guests themselves.
The couple would pay for the wedding and intimate reception after the ceremony. Keep in mind that because you are traveling by cruise ship, a "traditional" reception is not necessary. After the ceremony, you can offer cake and champagne and then you will have a lovely dinner in the dining room later on that day.
I am not talking about having a "bare bones" type of wedding. You can have the arch on the beach with fabric covered chairs, umbrellas, tropical flowers, etc. But, the true romance is the ambiance of the location you select.
This is where we can assist. Selecting the right destination, cruise ship and date is our expertise. We are the experts group weddings. Call us to discuss your perfect wedding!
